My students

I've successfully completed teaching my first production class at Comcast. It's been an experience. Mostly good. I did have some trouble organizing my thoughts sometimes when I was teaching certain areas. Especially areas in which I don't have as much expertise. For example, teaching cameras was a breeze. But when it came to something like lighting...it was a little more difficult since I hardly have any experience with lighting. But I do think teaching will become easier the more I do it. I kinda get the feel for how people pick up on things, the questions people have, and what works and what doesn't as far as explaining things. The TV world can get quite technical, so you have to explain things as simply as possible.

I heard somewhere that the best way to learn something is to teach it. I think this is absolutely true since I feel like I have learned more about how my studio works by teaching this class. But I can tell ya, teaching takes a lot out of you. I'm not used to talking so much non-stop. And I was just doing it for 3 hour sessions, 2 times a week . I couldn't imagine doing it 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

My students were great though. Many of them did not know each other before this class, yet they all got along like they've been friends for years. I'm really going to miss having their group at the studio. They shot their final project tonight. They were quite ambitious. The half-hour show was broken up into 5 segments. Everyone got to do something different for each segment. I got to see creativity from these people, which I don't see often enough from other people who use the studio. I got a lot of good laughs. From a technical standpoint, they all did relatively good.

There is one final class where they will be taking the written test. I'm confident that they will all pass. Since there is a high drop out rate, I think I have broken some records in the world of Public Access Producer classes. All nine people who were here for the first class, made it to the last. Was I just lucky...or am I that good of a teacher? I guess we'll see what happens in my next class.

I always kinda lose my voice after the first day of teaching a class.
