Cops and Firefighters visit Apartment 2C
Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at 5:12PM I returned home from work today to be greeted by an annoying beep coming from somewhere in the apartment. Whatever it was, it was beeping every 30 seconds or so. I assumed it was the smoke alarm battery that was low. So I got up on a chair and ripped it out of the ceiling, disabling it entirely. However, a few seconds later, I still heard the beep. Did I have another smoke alarm somewhere? I finally discovered that it was a carbon monoxide detector that was beeping. I looked closely at the detector. Everytime it beeped, it lit up a little light, written next to it: "ALARM - Move to fresh air." I was skeptical...I would think that if there was really a carbon monoxide leak, then it would be beeping a little bit more than once every 30 seconds. But I called the gas company anyways. The gas company connected me to the fire department who then told me to go outside and wait for them to arrive. A cop pulled up first. He got out and started talking to me. Pretty nice guy, about the same age as me. He said the FD were on their way with a special tool that will detect carbon monoxide. I envisioned multiple fire trucks with sirens blaring, turning down my street at any moment. Instead, the scene was slighly more low-key. A Lake Villa Fire Dept. Chevy Suburban, lights and sirens off, pulled up and 2 guys got out. They follwed me upstairs to the apartment. About 3 minutes later, everything checked out. There was no carbon monoxide. Just a faulty detector. I had a feeling it was nothing, but I guess it doesn't hurt to be safe.
